Perhaps you’ve heard about the car vending machine.
The world’s first fully automated vending machine dispenses real cars and was built by a used car dealership with locations in Nashville and Atlanta.
Before you get the wrong idea, this isn’t a machine that anyone can approach, insert two quarters, and get a car. It’s a little more complicated than that, which makes this cool concept not much more than a ridiculously expensive marketing ploy.
A marketing ploy that will probably work.
Here’s a brief video:
The words “vending machine” have long been associated with impulse buying and a quick solution to a temporary problem. If you need a drink at the mall (or headphones at the airport), you can insert some cash and get your instant fix.
This car vending machine is a little different. Car buyers still have to go through the process of finding and buying a car. They have to determine their desired make and model, decide on a budget, fill out paperwork, figure out financing, and basically buy the car just like at any other dealership.
The dealer, Carvana, is a little different because it allows buyers to complete transactions online, offers delivery, and includes a 7-day money back guarantee. Once the purchase process is complete, buyers have the option of getting to Nashville or Atlanta and then inserting a special coin into a 5-story machine, which will then deliver the car with spectacular effect.
Is the publicity stunt worth it? That, of course, depends on whom you ask. The Carvana website is peppered with positive testimonials about the buying experience, and the concept of having your car delivered by a massive machine is pretty cool.
I would just caution buyers to not get too caught up in buying a car just for that experience. At the end of the day all you’ll have is the car and whatever payment goes with it. Rather than shopping at one specific dealer, search listings that include many dealers and if you find the perfect car, with the desired features, at the right price, and it happens to be at a Carvana location, by all means, enjoy the vending machine experience.
It’s better to get the right car, delivered by a dealership, than the wrong car delivered by a machine.
